What is meant by operationalization of variables?
This refers to the need to make sure any variables being studied are described in a specific and testable way. For example, the common saying the ‘seeing is believing’ gives support that eye witness testimony should be taken as evidence for a crime. But to study these, we need operationalised variables to design the study around
“Participants will remember more correct information the older they are”
This is not operationalised, as we have no idea what type of information and the participants are being tested on, and what we mean by ‘older’ participants. Operationalisation is important so that people do not make wild and general conclusions based on a limited study, and that exact replications can be conducted to check the reliability of the findings
“Participants aged 18-25 will recall more one syllable words from a list of 20 than participants aged 68-75”
What is a meta analysis?
When a researcher takes the data from a lot of similar studies, and analyses all the data together, this is known as a meta-analysis. For example, a meta-analysis of attachment types finds that secure attachment is the most common type. This means that after a number of studies have been reanalyzed, the data from all those studies points to secure attachment being the most common.
Thanks for the question
Is it possible for them to ask a 12 marker like: Outline and evaluate what research has shown about STM/LTM.
So studies into their encoding/durations/capacities, if so how many would you need to talk about and what evaluations would you do?
If not when would these studies come up?
Also do you have any good evaluation points for the EPPE project, because I'm really stuck with thinking of some!
Yes, it is possible that there are 12 mark questions about encoding, capacity and duration of STM and/or LTM although there have been none so far. The studies have come up in smaller questions, such as 'outline what research has shown about the duration of STM, or use psychological research to distinguish between STM and LTM. You could also use them as supporting evidence for the MSM. Evaluative comments should focus on the validity, or lack of, in using the stimuli in laboratories. How useful are these studies? In terms of the EPPE project, the huge sample across different demographics should offer valid evaluative discussion, as should the practical applications of such research. However, the findings are now 12 years old, so changes in day care practices means that we cannot gauge the extent that day care is beneficial or detrimental with children today.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
